My primary focus since qualifying as a professional martial arts instructor has been to coach and mentor children to be the best version of themselves.

In 2013, I was invited to join the team of a local professional martial arts school for training with a view to becoming a martial arts instructor. This challenge excited me as I knew I would grow to be a better version of myself. At the same time, I could continue to coach and mentor people with positive attitudes and behaviours to improve their mental, physical, and emotional health. Martial Arts is so much more than kicking and punching. It embraces and enhances life skills such as confidence, self - esteem, resilience, self-control, perseverance, integrity, and respect.

Using martial arts as my medium I have helped thousands of children feel better about who they are, grow in confidence, self-esteem, become physically and mentally stronger, more resilient, and able to respond, not react, to situations.

What brought me to this point?

For eighteen years I worked in the insurance sector where I assessed people’s ability to carry out their occupation following an accident, illness, or injury. This involved investigating an individual’s physical limitations, their mental health fitness, as well as determining what social support network they had around them.

By managing the individual’s health needs, mental health risk factors and their emotional and support requirements, satisfactory improvements could be made to enable individuals to recover, in many cases, to their former level of functionality.

In this role I also represented the company as part of the governance team dealing with complex disputed physical and mental health claims, negotiating with the Financial Ombudsman Service and an individual’s legal representatives.

My earlier working life

During my earlier working life, both for the NHS and in insurance my job has always involved interaction with people. Over those years I saw how insecurities, whether a lack of confidence or self-esteem, impacts hugely on a person’s personal and work life. Many of these insecurities follow on from childhood. It was therefore a natural progression for me to qualify as a Children’s Wellbeing Practitioner.
